What are endodontic treatments?

Endodontic treatments treat the inside of the teeth.  If a cavity infects the chamber where the nerve resides, the only way of saving the tooth without extracting it is by treating the root canal.

A deep cavity or an injury to the surface of the tooth can cause serious harm and infections to the nerves and vessels in the pulp.

Endodontics or canal treatments consist of cleaning out the pulp cavity as well as the infected canals, and then placing a sealant to seal the spaces that had previously been cleaned and disinfected.

How do you know if you need endodontic treatment?

Treatment is necessary when the dental pulp gets inflamed or infected.  There can be many reasons for inflammation: deep cavities, repetitive dental procedures, a tooth fracture due to a blow, etc.  If the pulp inflammation or infection isn’t treated it could cause pain and/or form an absence.

Signs of infected dental pulp are: spontaneous pain, prolonged sensitivity to cold or heat, changes in tooth color, inflammation and discomfort of the gum around the affected tooth.  However, sometimes symptoms don’t appear.
