Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that studies the tissues around the tooth.

Types of periodontal treatment depend on your individual condition.  If your disease is still in the early stages, it may be treated with oral hygiene, cleaning and planing.

Surgical planing techniques are used for patients with moderate to advanced periodontal diseases in order to remove scales from below the gums.  The roots of these teeth are cleaned with specially designed tools.

Other techniques can be used for treating periodontal diseases.  For example, if your gums are receding, this can be avoided using gum grafts.  Or if you’re losing bone around a tooth, your periodontist can employ techniques to help replace the bone lost due to a periodontal disease.
